For the individual with baggy eyelids and hooding of the upper eyelids, Albuquerque Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, is an excellent procedure to make her/him look energetic and refreshed again. Hooding of the upper eyelids and bags under the lower lids give one the tired look. Albuquerque Blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and/or fat of the eye region to restore youthfulness. Typically, a crescent-shaped excess skin and underlying orbicularis muscle is removed. The incision is closed with a very fine suture under the skin. I perform the lower lid surgery with a subciliary incision. The incision line is within 1 mm from the lower eyelash line. I prefer this incision to a transconjunctival one (through the inside of the lid) because I can remove excess skin to tighten the skin much better. I do blepharoplasty either under local anesthesia or sedation, either in our Albuquerque office or in a surgery center. Patient satisfaction rate is very high. I definitely recommend eyelid surgery as the first facial surgery for those who are good candidates. Recovery: There will be bruising for 7-10 days for most people. I recommend cold pack on the eyes the first 24 hours and then warm compress starting the second day to facilitate resolution of bruising. Do not do vigorous exercise, lift, or strain in the first week to avoid bleeding from the surgical sites. Adequate fluid consumption and a stool softener is recommended to avoid constipation, which can occur with use of the pain medication. Here is more information about how I perform upper and lower blepharoplasty.
